Five alternatives to South America’s top destinations (Page 3)

Brazil’s beaches: thong bikinis, white sands, roaring surf and thumping nightlife. How predictable! Instead head inland to Bonito where savvy travellers can have an experience like no other. Armed with snorkels, masks and neoprene suits and boots, it’s a blissful one hour, 20 minute drift downstream through crystal-clear waters chockfull of 30 varieties of colourful fish, from tiny flickering shoals to two-foot long dorado. The town’s ‘municipal pool’, actually a section of river full of fish, makes a great place to chill out. Active types can visit the Gruta de Lago Azul or rappel 72m down into the Abismo de Anhumas to snorkel in a black underground lake.

Best time to visit: The rivers are clearest during dry season (June to August) but Bonito is a great place to visit any time of year.
