Hostel Ecological Expeditions, Bonito

Best for… getting more for your money.

Hostel Ecological Expeditions, Bonito © Emma FieldHostel Ecological Expeditions is the latest addition to Bonito’s thriving hostelling scene.

If you like your hostels bright, cheerful and sociable, this is the place for you. Located just off Bonito’s main road, the hostel is a 10-minute walk from the town’s central tourist restaurants.

Hostel Ecological Expeditions has a friendly staff and their fantastically welcoming attitude is a major part of what makes the place so appealing. They genuinely care both about the guests and the hostel – when I visited it was already receiving its second coat of paint, even though it opened only in July 2009. I found the staff equally happy helping to arrange trips to the Pantanal, day excursions to the surrounding caves, river swimming, abseiling, white-water rafting, onward travel or just sitting to have a chat.

Hostel Ecological Expeditions courtyard © Emma FieldThe first thing that struck me about the hostel was the lovingly hand-painted décor; colourful wildlife murals adorn every room, the dining-cum-television room and the entrance way. The back wall of our bedroom was covered in a painting of a tuiuiui (the bird of the Pantanal) and a caiman, the many-toothed relative of the crocodile. (Personally, I would have preferred to have next door’s Iguazu Falls watching over me as I slept, but whilst the artist merrily whistled away working on his next masterpiece, I couldn’t find it in me to ask to swap!)

The hostel’s 12 rooms line an open courtyard (soon to be filled with a swimming pool), the open-sided corridors of which are painted a spirit-lifting shade of orange, and hammocks swing outside each room.

The rooms are large and air conditioned with fridges, televisions and en suites. The above-average breakfast is included in the price and there is free internet and wifi. There’s also a kitchen, complete with washing machine and dryer (R$5 per load).
